The Most Overlooked Step in Budgeting

7 Simple Habits That Instantly Improved My Budget

video preview

💲 Money Minute - From Nick

One of the most overlooked parts of budgeting isn’t tracking your data, it’s reviewing it.

I see plenty of people who stay on top of their budget day-to-day and use it to make decisions… but rarely sit down to analyze what their data has to tell them.

These people use a budget for years, but still feel stuck. So they assume they need to start over.

But most of the time, that’s just not true.

Real progress comes from reviewing past data — not rebuilding your budget from scratch. And the review process is simple!

If you’re keeping your budget current, try this:

  • Pick one financial goal to focus on right now (debt, investing, or saving for something specific).
  • Quickly check your progress toward that goal on payday and at the end of each month.
  • Skim through budget categories to see if any money can be redirected toward your goal.

That’s it.

It takes less than two minutes, but those small reviews often uncover extra dollars you’d otherwise miss.

This video dives deeper into how I review my YNAB reports every three months, if you're interested in learning more.

And speaking of learning...

Nick and I recently watched an Alex Hormozi video that breaks down his approach to learning.

I like learning stuff. And if you read this newsletter, you probably do too.

But sometimes overwhelm and analysis paralysis creep in. Alex's strategy helps me overcome that, so I wanted to share my takeaways:

  1. Find the "top 10%" — people who already have the skill or life outcomes I admire.
  2. Identify the inputs those people practice consistently.
  3. Implement one of those inputs for 1-3 months.
  4. Analyze my reps.
    • What's going well?
    • What's not?
    • What separates my best efforts from the rest?
    • What's one change I could make to do more of what's working?
  5. Iterate on my best efforts.
  6. Repeat the process.

This approach will eventually lead to such refined efforts that people start thinking you're a "natural" — even though what they’re really seeing is a lot of consistent, intentional practice.

I don't know about you, but I often fall into the "they're just a natural" trap — especially when I skip the reps and jump straight to comparison.

But this framework helps me break that way of thinking. It reminds me that how I steward my life matters, and that consistent effort shapes both my circumstances and what I have to offer others.

And beyond the practical results, there's a subtle shift in thinking that happens when you implement these steps.

When you reach #4 (Analyze), you move from third-person learning to first-person learning. You stop measuring yourself primarily against others and start using your own experience to guide what comes next. At that point, it's like your learning starts gaining compound interest!

So if you’re feeling stuck—or staring down a goal that feels daunting— I hope Alex's framework helps you break through the overwhelm like it did for me.

Until next week,
Nick + Hanna
